Godawful Poetry Fortnight
What are the pillars of
civilisation?
Freedom and democracy?
George Bush speaks of
F&D
all the time,
I've rarely heard him called
civilised.
Maybe electricity, roads, water?
Health, education, jobs?
We hardly have these
yet we go on about India
being a 5000-year old
civilisation, don't we.
Peace of mind, communal
harmony, that kind of stuff?
No one's got that I think
yet the human race is
not counted among the
wildlife, anywhere,
is it?
I think I know.
The two pillars of society are
liquid soap
and a bum shower.
Those two.
You see, that indicates
a) running water is available
b) sanitation happens
Atleast you're confident
about being clean somewhat.
